TORONTO
“Refresh 08” Refresh 2008 is an exciting event cosponsored by
Toronto City Housing Corporation CHU 18 and Emmanuel Church
of the Nazarene. Volunteers will work together with residents of
the Sheppar-Yatescastle Community to pain the inside and
landscape the outside of each unit. At the same time CHU 18
Maintenance workers will be on site to bring the maintenance of
each unit up to date.
The purpose of the program is more than about painting,
landscaping and repairing the units of the
Sheppard-Yatescastle
residences.
It is about working together. It is about strengthening the community.
It is about doing something to make the world a better place.
Come join the team of volunteers who will make Refresh Festival 2008
a success.
To register contact Emmanuel church of the Nazarene at torontoemmanuel@rogers.com or 416-743-5895.
ORLANDO
There will be 5 to 8 owner-occupied homes that we will be working in.
These homeowners are not selected because of any denominational
affiliations but because they live in the Orange Blossom Trail corridor
and meet the criteria of OBT (homeowners that are either single-parent,
elderly, and/or struggle financially). The type of work that we do will
primarily depend on the skills of our volunteers. We are forming a local
team of skilled people that will help with all the pre-project details and
also serve as project leaders.
The type of work that we will be doing (depending on volunteer skills):
pressure washing, exterior painting, general repairs to exterior of homes,
installing security lights, handicap accessibility – repair to ramps and railing,
landscaping, minor plumbing issues, minor electrical issues, and we might
be involved with a mailbox replacement program. We are trying to have all
the projects located within a few blocks of each other to create a feeling of
a community project.
A little information about the neighborhood that we will be working in. Holden
Heights and Parramore which make up part of Orange Blossom Trail are two
of the Greater Orlando area’s most distressed neighborhoods. Orange
Blossom Trail is located just to the west of downtown Orlando. 48% of the
combined population of Holden Heights and Parramore live below the poverty
level. With the average household income of $22,805.00.
